Houston ranks among the top cities for small business owners in a new report.
Thanks to the efforts of groups like Station Houston, the Bayou City is showing a strong commitment to startups, according to the report from online personal finance publication GoBankingRates.com. The site ranks Houston 13th nationwide for startup activity with 92.6 startups for every 1,000 businesses.
The report cited Houston’s relatively high salaries and low cost of living as critical to attracting talent.
Houston is home to an estimated 500 technology startups in fields ranging from health care and data analytics to software development and clean energy. Last year, Houston area companies received $1.8 billion in venture funding, according to business intelligence service PrivCo.
In addition to Station Houston, other startup accelerators and incubators include the Texas Medical Center’s Innovation Institute, TMCx, Houston Exponential, The Cannon, and others.
